Funds changing their names isn’t that uncommon. What’s new?

More than 200 funds added terms like ‘ESG’, ‘sustainable’ or ‘impact’ to their names in the first six months of 2022, according to Citywire Amplify research. Almost $70bn of investments have had an ESG-adjacent label added to them, which ought to more accurately reflect an existing process or new policy.

So asset managers are revamping existing funds as well as launching new, ESG-friendly ones?

Absolutely. Citywire Amplify found that 97 funds added a ‘sustainable’ suffix to their names over six months, with 62 becoming ‘ESG’. Less frequently used terms included ‘impact’, ‘low carbon’, ‘low carb’ and ‘responsible’.

But almost two dozen had switched from one ESG-type term to another.

Hang on, so the first ESG-y name wasn’t ESG-y enough?

Some funds already using an ESG-type label are swapping it for a new one. Three ‘ESG’ funds were renamed to ‘climate’ and one to ‘sustainable’.

Four funds switched from ‘responsible’ to ‘sustainable’ and two more switched the other way around. And four ‘responsible’ funds switched to ‘climate aligned’, ‘climate change’ and ‘sustainable’.

Is everyone at it?

Starting with asset classes: seeing the greatest number of changes was global equities (38), followed by European equities (30) and mixed assets (28). The most popular name change in global equities was to ‘sustainable’.

The group making the most amendments was UBS Asset Management (13). All had ‘sustainable’ added to funds that previously carried no ESG-type marker. The second highest was DWS, noteworthy because of greenwashing allegations levelled against the firm last year – though the outcome of subsequent investigations is still unknown. Citywire Amplify approached DWS for comment.

Don’t hold back – what did groups tell you?

Groups that responded to Citywire Amplify’s request for comment gave varying reasons for the name changes. Some reflected the shuffling of the fund deck. For example, JP Morgan had merged away a global sustainable equity fund and rolled it into a restructured ‘socially responsible’ strategy. Some claimed it was a response to changing EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) rules. These tightened last year with the introduction of Article 9 funds, which have an explicit sustainability objective.

Swiss Life said using ‘ESG’ rather than ‘sustainable’ ‘avoids confusion’ between Article 8 (ESG) and Article 9 (sustainable). Axa Investment Managers said a name change reflected a shift in strategy ‘from a responsible approach to an impact one’. Nordea’s reasons were pragmatic: ‘We wanted a name that would work in all our markets.’

Does it matter?

On the record, fund selectors will say they judge every fund by its own merits. But privately, asset managers think ESG labels are being used to screen out funds: if you want to make a shortlist, you’d better have the right name.

Is anyone peeling back the label?

Yes. Regulators and research agencies are turning up the heat. In the US, funds will have to prove that 80% or more of their assets are invested in a way that justifies using ESG in their name. And some member states are going beyond the EU’s Mifid II rules. Germany, France and Switzerland all have either recently implemented or drafted regulations that put requirements on using certain terminology, such as ‘impact’.

Is it just up to regulators?

Not quite. Influential and independent fund data provider Morningstar shook the market this year by cutting 27% of European funds from its sustainable funds. The culled funds (1,600 of them) amounted to $1.2tn in assets. The action centred around the EU’s SFDR labelling system, which allows funds to self-declare as Article 8, now seen as a benchmark for ESG. But Morningstar decided: ‘Many funds that place themselves into Article 8, for example, are not funds we would independently classify as sustainable funds.’

Too bad for European funds, then.

The consequence goes beyond Europe, as Article 8 is being used as a benchmark in other markets, too. In Asia, Article 8 (green) and 9 (very green) funds are being promoted as such. Marketers find the label adds credibility.

Regulators are all waking up to the risks of greenwashing, with varying focus on naming.

In Brazil, managers can commit to certain disclosures and in return can use an ‘IS’ marker for their funds. In Australia, regulators released a memorandum clarifying expectations on how funds are marketed but did not make any proposals around fund naming.
